Paws 2 Care Coalition Adoption Day & Fundraising Event

This is a fundraising event for Paws 2 Care Coalition on 9/21/13. (A portion of all sales on 9/21/13 will be donated to the Paws 2 Care Coalition. They are a a Non Profit 501(c)(3) Rescue Organization.

This is a great opportunity to support a local dog rescue organization simply by purchasing items you might need for your pets (food, treats, toys, grooming supplies, flea & tick prevention, etc.).

There will also be raffle prizes, free samples of food and treats from Stella & Chewys, Nature's Kitchen, Genesis, Sojos, Earthbath, Nupro, Nylabone, Tiki Dogs, Zuke's, Grizzly Salmon Oil, Kat Walking Dogs and others.

Not all the dogs coming to David Neuwirth's store are looking for treats or toys. Some want a loving home.

Neuwirth, owner of Harlo's Healthy Pets in downtown Hollywood, is working to make that a reality by hosting fundraisers for animal rescue groups around South Florida.

"It's my way of giving back to the community," he said.

Harlo's started in 2009 as a delivery service. Since opening the shop in May, he's committed to hosting at least one benefit per month.  

One of the first nonprofits to have an event was South Florida Siberian Husky Rescue, and Get A Life Pet Rescue recently raised dollars and awareness at the store. 

Stacy Narcisse, president of Get A Life, is grateful for the exposure to promote adoption and foster care opportunities.

"It's important and very much needed," she said.

The Plantation-based organization is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs less than 25 pounds. Money from their fundraiser will go toward veterinarian bills and the holistic dog food diet that's fed to their furry charges, said Narcisse, of Coral Springs.

Get A Life volunteers set up a mini boutique with doggie kimonos, T-shirts, car magnets and tote bags. A pet talent contest was won by Tucker, an 11-year-old border collie and certified therapy dog from Boca Raton that wowed the crowd by stacking multi-colored rings and waving hello.

"These events are great and very informative," said Diane Israel, Tucker's owner. "There's a lot of people out there who don't know about these rescue groups."

Kathy Marriott, a Get A Life volunteer from Davie, has adopted three dogs from the group. The organization has some 25 to 30 dogs in foster care at one time and would like to save more, she said.

"We desperately long for a permanent shelter, a warehouse or a home, where we can house the dogs," Marriott said.

Neuwirth will continue to welcome pet rescue groups. His only requirements are that the organizations be nonprofit and no-kill. In September, there will be two fundraisers — Compassionate Pug Rescue on Sept. 7 and Paws 2 Care Coalition on Sept. 21.

K9 Water Festivals 2013

When the water parks close to humans in the fall, they open for one weekend just for dogs. For more than 10 years, this has been one of the most popular pet events at Broward County parks.

Fee is $5 per dog for a 50-minute session.  First session begins at 9 a.m. and last session begins at 4 p.m. (small dogs only at the 4 p.m. session). Sessions start on the hour every hour.

Calling all small dogs!  At the request of dog moms and dads with pets 25 pounds or less, the last session of every day will be for small dogs only!  So, if you want your small dog to only mix with other small dogs, the session for you starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 4:50 p.m. - no large dogs will be allowed in this session.

Here are the rules for the event:

• All dogs must be off leash when inside the facility and will be free to play in the water park.
• Dogs must be sociable and well behaved.
• Dogs must have proof of current rabies vaccination and county license tag.
• Water playgrounds will be closed to humans and open only for dogs (and lifeguards).
• All dogs are limited to no more than two sessions per day.

Pack Walk in the Park (September 2013)

The September Pack Walk will take place on Sunday 29, 2013 at TY Park.

Pack Walk in the Park (group dog walk) is an opportunity to get some exercise (for you and your dog) and socialize with other dog owners (non-dog owners are welcome, too!).

We will walk the two-mile loop of newly paved pathways for walking, jogging, skating, and biking. Plants to attract butterflies have also been placed along the park’s northern corridor.
TY Park requires all dogs to be on a 6' leash (no retractable / flexi leads) at all times.TY Park's admission fee is $1.50 per person (ages 6 and up)

After you enter the park through the toll booth, take your 1st right turn & park. You will see a red & white sign with a picture of a butterfly that says "Listen to Nature! Please turn down your radio." We will meet in this area and start walking at 9 AM (please arrive by 8:45 AM and allow time for entry, parking, etc).

We will have some treats, samples, and some give aways for your dogs after the walk!*

Before You Add A Dog to Your Family, Consider This….

I have been volunteering with several local dog rescue groups for years.  It can be frustrating to see so many dogs that have been abandoned due to their owner’s ignorance.  I understand that there are some unforeseen or uncontrollable situations that make it necessary for a dog to be re-homed, but in my experience, most cases of owner surrenders are due to human flaws.

            Adding a dog to your family is a commitment to that dog for the life.  Depending on the breed of dog, the average lifespan might range from 10 – 15 years.  The first question you need to ask yourself is, are you prepared to be committed to your dog for a decade or more?  I can’t tell you how many people have called a rescue to give up their dog because they just had a child, or got into or out of relationship.  If having a child or change of relationship status is going to cause you to dump your dog at a shelter; don’t get a dog to begin with. 

            I would bet that anyone involved in rescue will tell you many stories of people who abandon their dog after a divorce and equally as many stories of dogs being abandoned after a baby is born.  If you have a commitment to a dog and don’t think you can handle both a dog and a child than don’t get a dog if children are in your future.  Dogs are not a temporary stand in for a child; only to be forgotten and dumped once a child is born.

            Another reason that so many dogs of all breeds and mixed breeds end up in need of rescue is that people make an impulse decision without doing the research needed to find the best fit.  Some breeds are very active and require daily exercise; other dogs are more of a couch potato.  Some dogs are quite vocal; certain breeds need more mental stimulation; some breeds are more difficult to train.  There are breeds of dogs that require more grooming than others.  The bottom line is; find the dog that fits your personality, life style, level of experience in training and energy level.  Spend time learning about what will be required to properly care for your dog (including time commitments for exercise, grooming, training, etc. as well as financial needs).   For example, don’t get a Siberian Husky if you can’t deal with the shedding.  They do shed and if you do your research in advance, you will learn that shaving them is not a viable option (they can actually suffer from heat stroke if you shave them and take away their natural insulation.) 

            I am an advocate of rescuing / adopting dogs.  Please consider rescuing a dog before you buy a dog.  There are rescue organizations for just about every breed of dog.  There are also all breed / mixed breed rescues.  No matter what type of dog you are looking for, there is a non-profit, rescue to help.   If you decide to purchase a puppy, please do your research to find a reputable breeder.  Do NOT buy from a pet store (you will be purchasing / supporting puppy mill dogs).  Check references and do your research to find a respectable breeder. 

If you are willing to take the time to find the right dog to fit your lifestyle and commit to that dog for his or her entire life, you will find that your life will be enhanced more than you could have ever imagined. Dogs do require your time and energy, but they give back so much more than we could ever give them.

Compassionate Pug Rescue's Adoption Day & Fundraising Event

"Close Encounters of the Puggie Kind" - This is an Adoption and Fundraising Event for Compassionate Pug Rescue (CPR) Saturday, September 7, 2013. A portion of all sales at Harlo's Healthy Pets on 9/7 will be donated to CPR. CPR is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer run pug rescue organization based in South Florida. 

CPR accepts all pugs and occasionally other dogs on the brink of being put to sleep regardless of their condition, nurses them back to health and finds them a loving forever home. A portion of all sales at Harlo's Healthy Pets on 9/7 will be donated to CPR.
